The Man Up North
In spring 2023, The Man Up North released their self-titled album.
HUMO (17/04/’23) wrote: “The Horrors meets Leonard Cohen meets Interpol. Equal parts indie rock and mild psychedelia. As exciting as it is thoughtful. Heart and balls keep each other in balance for thirteen tracks.”
Luminous Dash (02/04/’23) is also a fan: “Their sound is a combination of The National and Interpol with a touch of Depeche Mode. This LP has international allure and is certainly already one of the best albums of 2023.”
They had their album release show at Het Depot in Leuven.
HLN (29/05/’23) wrote: “The Man Up North more than lived up to the high expectations of Het Depot, filling the large hall for the record release of their first album of the same name.”
In November 2023, The Man Up North joined Starsailor’s “Silence Is Easy” Twentieth Anniversary Tour for a couple dates at Paard (The Hague, NL) and De Roma (Antwerp, BE).
Luminous Dash (18/11/’23) had this to say about the shows: “Live, The Man Up North sounds like Simple Minds (at the time of New Gold Dream and Sparkle In The Rain), with a touch of U2 (Achtung Baby period). And yes, they sound very original and look rock solid. This is a band that deserves much more attention than it is currently receiving. The Man Up North is a really great band that has everything it takes to make it.”
On January 14th, 2024 their single “When The Ships Part” aired for the first time on Radio Willy during DJ Wim Oosterlinck’s show.
In March 2024, New Model Army takes The Man Up North on their Unbroken Tour as support at Hedon (Zwolle, NL), Het Depot (Leuven, BE) and TivoliVredenburg (Utrecht, NL).
NMTH (02/04/’24) wrote about the Tivoli show: “Slow down is a roaring track that mixes the melancholy of Cohen with the driving of Interpol.”
The Man Up North joins Starsailor for a second time on their new ‘Where The Wild Things Grow” Tour in April ‘24 at Melkweg (Amsterdam, NL) and La Madeleine (Brussels, BE)
“Sturdy eighties guitars and nice electronics with a bite. Add to that strong vocals from the frontman with extra points for the backing vocals of Charlotte Marsan, who brought the necessary relief to the sometimes heavy, angry songs.” Da Music Magazine (12/04/’24).
“Jochen Theys has a pleasant voice timbre, just like all those wonderful transposing guitar riffs that are scattered around. The Man Up North opened with the rocker 'Max', and its tight drum intro. They continued their set with the diffuse 'Crossroads', ‘Blanket’ and 'Fresh New Start', with that exciting Reverb. 'When The Ships Part' and 'Slow Down' were wonderfully danceable synth pop. Nice set…” Chords & Keys Magazine (12/04/’24).
“A Belgian group with a remarkable rise, The Man Up North set the Ancienne Belgique (Brussels, BE) stage alight as the opening act for Starsailor. Since the release of their self-titled debut album in spring 2023, the Belgian band has gradually established itself as a reliable name on the indie rock scene. A strong musical identity, The Man Up North embodies a new generation of Belgian groups at the crossroads of atmospheric rock and electronic pop. An elegant, deep and vibrant universe, to follow very closely.” Live & Shoot Magazine (09/10/’25)
The Man Up North are Jochen Theys, Steffen Verpoorten, Alexander Meulemans, Charlotte Marsan, Moreno Claes, Michael Degreef & Dominique Dauwe.
